The Ultimatum: Queer Love

I liked this season of the ultimatum, but parts of it were really difficult to watch. I feel like if couples are in a situation where one partner gives the other an ultimatum, they should work out their problems on their own and not go on reality tv. I don’t think that temporarily breaking up with your partner and entering a trial marriage with a stranger is a good way to test your relationship either. If anything, you should reevaluate your own relationship and if it doesn’t work out, choose to date other people.
For example, Lexi forced Rae to go on the show and then got mad at her for being intimate with another woman. She can’t get mad at Rae when she puts her in that situation in the first place. So naturally, I was surprised when they were still engaged and talking about wedding plans at the reunion. That was until I saw the message at the end of the episode saying they had since broken up.
I feel like if a couple even gets to the point of an ultimatum, that’s just a sign that they should break up because they’re clearly not on the same page anymore. It’s also difficult to give my opinion on this season because I also feel like I shouldn’t be passing judgment on these people’s private relationships.
Even though I realize that reality tv can portray people differently, I thought that some of the women were really mean to their partners and didn't seem like nice people in general (Mildred, Yoly, and Lexi).
Mildred: She seems like she has a lot of her own personal issues she needs to deal with before she can even consider being in a relationship. The fact that she and Tiff broke up so many times was also a big red flag.
Yoly: I don’t think Yoly was respectful to her partner either. She kept going back and forth between Mal and Xander, which was particularly unfair to Mal who had come into this experience with her. I also think it was really unfair of Yoly to accept Mal’s proposal when she still had feelings for Xander. It was almost as if she wanted to keep her options open.
Lexi: Like I mentioned before, Lexi was just really mean to Rae for choosing Vanessa as her trial marriage partner and being intimate with her. Maybe I’m biased because I’m also Asian, but Rae seems like such a nice person who just wanted to make her partner (who forced her into an uncomfortable and stressful situation) happy. She even proposed despite her reservations about marriage.
