Hi! It's nice to meet you.
My name’s HannaMei and I’m a recent college graduate living and working in San Diego. I recently graduated from UC San Diego with a major Japanese Studies. I was also a part of the tennis and Japanese club at UCSD. For the past year, I’ve just been adjusting to the transition from being a student to joining the workforce and what next steps I want to take career wise. On the weekends, you can find me relaxing at home and watching tv or exploring San Diego and discovering new food spots. Below I’ve listed some of my hobbies, which are also potential things I might write blog posts about!
Hobbies

1 / Reading
My favorite author is Haruki Murakami. He’s a Japanese author who writes what can only be described as a type of magical realism in my opinion. I’ve read almost all of his books and am looking forward to his new book, The City and Its Uncertain Walls, coming out in English. I was borrowing books from the library at one point. However, going to the library every few weeks to get new books and keeping up with due dates became too much of a chore so I’ve just been rereading some of my old Murakami books. I want to start reading again, but I’m very picky when it comes to books so it can sometimes be difficult to find a book or author that I really like.
2 / Netflix
I watch a lot of Netflix in my freetime. (That’s what I want my first few blog posts to be about.) I tend to gravitate towards anime, k-drama, or reality tv shows. I don’t watch that many movies, but when I do they tend to be romantic comedies. I went to the movies last weekend for the first time in what seems like a really long time and got nauseous within the first 30 minutes. So I don’t think I’ll be going back to the movie theater anytime soon.
3 / Video Games
I actually don’t play video games that often, but when I do it’s usually when a new Pokémon game comes out. The most recent game I played was Pokémon Violet, which was the first Pokémon game I didn’t finish.
4 / Working Out
I go to the gym in my apartment complex to work out, but more recently I’ve been going to 24 Hour Fitness. I mainly go to the gym to maintain my physical health and have also found that it benefits my mental health as well.
5 / Tennis
I was a member of the intramural tennis team in college, but haven’t had the opportunity to play tennis lately. I want to get back into playing tennis because I think it’s a great sport and have been playing since middle school.
6 / Cats
I have a cat named Mitten (14F) and my boyfriend has a cat named Bond (4M). Bond is named after Bondman from the popular anime SPYXFAMILY. Recently, we’ve been trying to get Bond and Mitten to get along since we’re going to move in together.
7 / Other
Cooking, gardening, and drawing were some of the hobbies I picked up during the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve always loved drawing and gardening, so I simply used the pandemic as an opportunity to revisit those hobbies. However, I can’t say I knew how to cook (at least not very well) until after the pandemic. I’ve been trying to cook more often, but it’s been difficult since I started working. I like to cook Asian food the most because that’s what I enjoy eating.
