What I Watched in May

I feel like there’s either nothing to watch on Netflix or too many shows to watch that come out all at once. I feel like that’s what happened with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, XO Kitty, and Selling Sunset this past month.

Selling Sunset

I’ve seen all the previous seasons of Selling Sunset and really liked the most recent one. I really liked Crishelle in particular and think she’s a really honest and genuine person. I even started following her on Instagram after finishing the show. Even though it's still difficult for me to tell what's really or staged on these reality tv shows, I feel like I've got a good idea of what's what on this season on Selling Sunset. I feel like the drama with her and Mary and Nicole was real and the drama with Bre and Chelsea was scripted. I don't really have any other thought about this past season except that I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one!

XO Kitty

I really liked To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018), To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love you (2020), and To All the Boys: Always and Forever (2021). Although all three movies lacked Asian representation, I love romantic comedies and these movies were no different. So naturally I was excited when I saw the trailer for XO Kitty and admittedly finished the whole season within a couple of days.

Spoiler Alert: I liked that there was more Asian representation and how the show was set in Korea. (I’m also a big fan of Korean dramas, so this was really cool to see.) However, I thought the plot was confusing, there were too many love interests, and Kitty’s sexuality was largely overlooked. There were several different plot points mainly driven by the “love square". Kitty likes Dae (who eventually reciprocates her feelings), has an infatuation with Min Ho, and then realizes her feelings for Yuri and her potential bisexuality. And to top it all off Kitty doesn’t end up with either Dae or Yuri. Instead there’s a scene at the end of episode 10 that hints at her relationship with Min Ho in the next season.

It felt like Netflix writers were just trying to check off all the boxes by creating a plot that wasn’t stereotypical rom com and adding a queer character.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story

I can’t say I really remember what I thought about Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story because I watched it a few weeks ago. The only thing I do remember is that I didn’t really like it as much as Bridgerton. I thought that the King’s condition, which was a running joke in the original series, wasn’t as believable in Queen Charlotte. The ending where Charlotte and George sit under the bed was very touching, however, and did make me teary.
